SSD and DVD mounting
This is the third iteration of the cage I mentioned previously: it had only one hard drive hung using Velcro tape. The funny thing is, that in the very final version of the Cube I decided there was no drive cage at all – everything changed when SSDs became more affordable and consumer driven, which I didn't anticipate when I started over a year previous.
OCZ released its Vertex SSD drive and I was sold from there after seeing the benchmarks for myself. I knew that my Cube must have the fastest drive on market (at the time). To install the smaller 2.5in Vertex I only needed a nice simple stand – I made it from red piece of acrylic, bent into an L shape using a hot iron and installed it to main bottom panel right in the middle of the case.
It simplified things fantastically and a solid state disk meant no vibration, noise and only a little extra heat.
As for the DVD drive, it went right under the top panel. I found a slot loading drive, so I cut out nice long thin hole for inserting DVDs in front panel – to get it accurately straight it was pretty hard as I had to do it by hand.
